23-24 School Year Updates: Umba

Umba is in her second year of secondary school, equivalent to 8th grade. She is the youngest of six children and the first to study past the second grade. Her father passed away some time ago and Umba lives with an older, married sister. Her mother lives with family or friends and attempts to make money selling recycled products in the streets. Despite having the odds stacked against her, Umba loves studying, works hard in school, and consistently comes to the tutoring sessions run by Hope Sparked as you can see in the pictures below. Umba’s diligence and inspiring spirit is the Spark of Hope that can end a generational cycle of poverty.
